Four Ways to Build Willpower

It’s time to start using your strength of mind to help strengthen your body. Muscles get stronger by resisting the power of weights. Inner strength is achieved by overcoming inner resistance. Try the suggestions below to start fortifying your willpower:

  • You get up in the morning and the bed is unmade. You don’t want to take the time to straighten the covers, and besides, you tell yourself that you’ll only mess them up again when you go to bed at night. Don’t give in to the little voice that says, “Do it later.” Suck it up and make your bed while you are thinking about it.
  • You come home after a long, tiring day at work. You need to wash your hair, but you really want to relax and watch TV. Resist the temptation to crease the couch and instead beeline for the shower first.
  • You continually say you are going to exercise but you never follow through on your promise. Before you go to bed to night, go for a ten minute walk or run, or lift weights. Resist the temptation to pull a Scarlett O’Hara and say, “I’ll think about that tomorrow.”
  • You take the bus to work each day and always hope to get a seat for your commute. Instead try standing or giving up your seat to someone else for one week.
